South Dakota

Cases: Persons who meet the national surveillance case definition for COVID-19. According to the case definition, a confirmed case includes persons with a positive PCR test and a probable case includes persons with a positive antigen test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. A positive case moves from active to recovered status based on the CDC guidelines for removal from isolation.

Hospitalized: Currently Hospitalized numbers include COVID-19 cases and suspects that are in the hospital under transmission-based precautions. The number may include out-of-state cases and suspects. SD-DOH reports on data directly entered by hospitals into the US Department of Health and Human Services TeleTracking system. Federal entities, such as the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, are not subject to reporting. Ever Hospitalized include COVID-19 cases that were, at some point during their infection, hospitalized under transmission-based precautions. The number of persons ever hospitalized are cumulative and includes only South Dakota resident cases. Data are reported from the South Dakota Electronic Disease Surveillance System.

Deaths Among Cases: This data includes deaths reported by death certificate or deaths within 20 days of a COVID-19

infection. SD-DOH does not report deaths until a certified death record has been filed with COVID-19 as a cause or contributing factor. By law, a death record must be filed within 5 days of the date of death. See the Deaths Tab for info.
